ARTIST PROFILE

Daniel Powers earned his BFA in art history at Ohio University, undertook graduate studies in art history at the University of Texas at Austin and worked toward an MFA in medieval German art history at Westfaelische Wilhelms Universitaet in Muenster, Germany. He holds an MFA in illustration from Marywood University in Scranton, PA.

This spring his watercolors can be seen at the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies' 31st Annual Exibition in Lubbock, TX. His work has been exhibited at The Society of Illustrators in New York City; the Bologna Children's Book Faire in Bologna, Italy; the Sangren Gallery at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, MI; the Elizabeth Stone Gallery in Birmingham, MI; the Bardean Gallery in Albuquerque, NM; Henderson Fine Arts Gallery at San Juan College in Farmington, NM; and at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM.

His illustration is also part of the Mazza Museum, the largest collection of original children's book art in the world (click "News and Links" for details).

Powers has been honored by the Children's Reading Round Table of Chicago for his contributions to children's literature and was awarded "Pick of the List" by the American Booksellers Association for "Jiro's Pearl." "From the Land of the White Birch" was featured as "The Very Best in Children's Book Illustration" by the Society of Illustrators in 1997, and he received an artist in residency from the Kalani Honua Institute for his work on "Dear Katie, The Volcano Is a Girl." Powers was the 2004 Ezra Jack Keats/Kerlan Memorial Fellow at the University of Minnesota.

Powers is professor of illustration at Savannah College of Art and Design.
